Board Member Bios
Ann grew up in Evanston, Illinois and graduated from Carroll College in Waukesha. She and her husband, Curt are owners of Systems Furniture, Inc. in De Pere, an office furniture dealer and contract interior design firm with clients across the state of Wisconsin. They raised three daughters in Allouez and their family now includes two granddaughters. Heritage Hill has been a neighbor and an important part of Ann’s life for over 35 years providing great experiences on the volunteer Guild, Corporation and Foundation boards as well as wonderful memories of family fun at special events, concerts and our oldest daughter’s wedding at the Moravian Church. February 2018 - present.
An “Allouez kid", Rick’s family home was within a few blocks of Heritage Hill. He graduated from Marquette University and joined Murphy Insurance, now Aon Risk Solutions in 1972. He holds the professional designations of Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant, and is currently a Senior Vice President at Aon. Rick previously served on the Heritage Hill Corporate Board, and has held voluntary leadership positions with a number of organizations, including Brown County United Way; Green Bay Symphony; Chamber of Commerce; YMCA; Rotary and The Greater Green Bay Community Foundation. He is a longtime member of the UW-Green Bay Council of Trustees, and in 2011 received the President’s Award from ASPIRO. Rick’s wife, Susie, a fifth-generation Green Bay native, retired from a career with the Green Bay Public Schools. Their family includes three married daughters and sons-in-law, and four grandchildren. In addition to local history they enjoy theater, travel, kayaking and ballroom dancing. Peter is CEO of Circ360, LLC, a Wisconsin firm specializing in land planning and development. Peter recently served as the Interim Executive Director for Heritage Hill State Historical Park in 2016-17. He retired from the Wisconsin DNR in 2015, where he served as the Wisconsin State Parks Chief of Recreation, Planning and Development. A lifelong Wisconsin resident, his passion for community service and the outdoors led him to earn a degree in Urban Planning from UW Eau Claire, his hometown. Peter’s resume also includes working as a City Planner in Eau Claire followed by two decades of owning and leading recreational development firms where he developed resorts and hotels and operated a hospitality management business. As an outdoor enthusiast he has completed numerous long-distance biking and running events, and still considers his bicycle his second home. He currently resides in Fond du Lac, WI with his long-time partner Tana. They collectively share five children and four grandchildren. Board Member: March 2018 - present.
Scott Copeland - President
Scott has a strong background in financial analysis, retail management, strategic planning, operations, negotiations, staff development, and system implementations. In addition to Heritage Hill, Scott also serves on the Board of Directors of Prospera Credit Union where he served three years as Chairman of the Board. He also serves as an advisor for the Habitat for Humanity Restore Retail Outlet. Prior to retirement he worked at Goodwill Industries in the position of Chief Operating Officer of Retail and Logistics and as a Senior Vice-President at Shopko Stores Inc. Scott and his wife Nancy are the parents of two sons and four grandchildren. Board member: November 2013 - present.
Phil Danen - Member at Large
Phil is a business attorney in De Pere. A partner in the lawfirm of Roels, Keidatz, Fronsee & Danen, LLP, he takes an active part in community life. Currently the Chairman of the Town of Ledgeview, he’s served on the town board since 2005. In addition to Heritage Hill Foundation, Phil is on the board of directors for Encompass Early Education and Care, Inc. and Urban Hope Corporation. Phil studied History and Economics at DePauw University and attended The John Marshall Law School in Chicago. An avid golfer, Phil enjoys his three amazing children who also love to spend time and volunteer at Heritage Hill! Board member: January 2013 - present.
Jan was raised in a small village on Long Island Sound about 20 miles north and slightly east of New York City. He graduated from Yale University in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He joined Procter and Gamble as a project engineer shortly thereafter at its Soap Division plant on Staten Island. He and Stephanie were married a few months later. Transfers to soap plants in Baltimore and Cincinnati occurred in the early 1960s where Jan had Operations Management assignments. In 1968, the family was transferred to Green Bay where Jan became an Operations Manager for the Paper Division. In 1981, Jan accepted an offer to join a friend's printing company (Belmark, Inc.) as a minority partner and Operations Vice-President. Through the years since, Jan has been on the YMCA, Allouez Anchor Soccer and Green Bay Country Club Boards and served as President for the latter two. He joined the Heritage Hill Foundation Board in 2001 and served as President in 2003-2004. He participated in and helped lead three Capital Campaigns: Education and Restoration Centers, the Cotton House upgrade and Fort Howard. Most exciting about these campaigns was meeting the incredibly generous local individuals, families, businesses and foundations who contributed over $5 million to make it all happen. Mavis Martens - Emeritus
Mavis grew up on a farm in southwestern Minnesota. After working in Minneapolis and Chicago, she moved to Green Bay in 1962 to become a travel consultant. She worked for a few different travel agencies, eventually owning her own for a time. Her love of travel has inspired her to stay active in her chosen field as she continues to assist clients with their travel plans as an independent contractor with Journeys Unlimited. As a result, she has had the amazing opportunity to travel worldwide, visiting all seven continents! Mavis is passionate about the organizations she supports. She is a lifetime member and active volunteer of the Salvation Army Advisory Board. She was instrumental in the fundraising and building of the Altrusa House, and continues to serve on the Operations Committee and participates in many of the Altrusa Club activities. Mavis has been involved at Heritage Hill for almost 30 years as a volunteer and has served as an officer of the Guild, a member of the Corporation Board and several years with the Foundation as an officer and now emeritus member. Her late husband, Frank, was also very active at Heritage Hill for many years. Mavis has 8 stepchildren, 17 step grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. Her favorite retreat is her little "Mexican Hacienda" in the Baja of Mexico where she spends part of each cold winter. Board Member: 2002 - present.
Sharon is a lifelong resident of Green Bay. She graduated from Silver Lake College with degrees in Business and Accounting. For the past 14 years she has worked in Sales at Schreiber Foods, most recently as Director Contract Manufacturing Sales working with large consumer branded companies. In addition to serving on the Board for Heritage Hill, Sharon has served in various roles on church boards as well as Brown County Children’s Charity Golf Classic. In her free time she enjoys travel, golf and spending time with family and friends. Sharon has two daughters and two step children. Board member: 2016 - present.
Barbara Patz - Vice President
Born in Pulaski, WI Barb received a BA in English and journalism from St. Norbert College. Her teaching career spans 25+ years serving at both private and public high school English in a number of districts. After receiving her Masters in English,she also served as an adjunct instructor in writing on the university level. Later in her career she also served as Director of Development for four years at Notre Dame Academy,in Green Bay. Barb and her husband Alan have lived in Green Bay since 1976, recognizing what a wonderful community it is to raise a family. They have three daughters: one living in Washington DC, our middle in Chicago, IL, and our youngest in New York City. They love visiting and spending as much time with them as they can, especially now that they are both retired. “I have a strong belief in education and recognize Heritage Hill as a gem to our community.” Board member: 2013 - present.
Ken Petter - Secretary
Ken is a Wisconsin native and has been a part of the Green Bay community for the past 23 years. He holds his B.S. in Economics with a minor in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. Ken’s career has been dedicated to Robert W. Baird for the past 21 years, continuing as a Managing Director overseeing both the Green Bay and Fox Valley branches. Ken is an active member of the community having spent many years coaching. He is a former board member of Scholarship Inc, now serving as a member on the Finance Committee. Currently, Ken is a board member for the Boys and Girls Club of Green Bay. Ken and his wife Lisa are the proud parents of twins Matthew and Ryan and a daughter Katelyn. Ken is excited to be a part of preserving the history of the Green Bay area with Heritage Hill. In his free time, he enjoys golf and spending time with his family. Board member: 2015 - present.
Mike Raymaker - Member at Large
Mike grew up on the west side of Green Bay in the shadow of many of the historic buildings now at Heritage Hill. His interest in history and background as an investment manager with Smith Barney led to his involvement with the early efforts to establish Heritage Hill State Historical Park. He was on the initial team that envisioned the Park concept and lobbied Madison for its development. As a co-founder of Heritage Hill State Historical Park and Heritage Hill Foundation, Mike has served the Foundation for over 40 years. He has served in every office of the board, the Endowment and Strategic Planning Committees and six capital campaigns. Mike and his wife Jessie actively serve as honorary co-chairs of the current Fort Howard Guard House campaign. In June 2012 Mike received the Foundation’s first annual History Keeper award for his contribution in developing and sustaining the Foundation and Heritage Hill. Mike also serves on the board for the Friends of Wisconsin State Parks, the Green Bay Botanical Garden, the Ecumenical Partnership for Housing (Kitchen Cabinet), is a trustee for St. Mary Catholic Community of De Pere and has served on 7 other community boards. He and Jessie are the proud parents of two children and a champion English and Irish Setter. Board member: 1975 - present.
With a fundraising career spanning 36 years, Don has served as a college professor, in an executive role for two for-profit companies, as the chief advancement officer in two colleges and universities, and as a consultant. Don has served on the boards of educational institutions, cultural organizations and foundations. He and his partner, Dr. Maria Zehren, currently operate The Winston Group, a fundraising consulting company, which specializes in fund development, capital campaigns, board governance and planning for non-profit organizations. Don has a bachelors and masters degree, and two honorary doctorates. He has served on regional and national non-profit boards. Board member: 2014 - present.
Raised in Freedom WI, Vern has been a resident of Green Bay since 1968. He retired from his engineering consulting engineering business in 2009 after servicing public and private clients in NE Wisconsin for 40 years. He is now looking forward to sharing his expertise with Heritage Hill. Vern is an Alumnus of UW Madison (Civil Engineering 1966) and UW Green Bay (Administrative Science 2002). He and his wife Mary celebrate 47 years of marriage and 4 children. His favorite activity is spending time with their grandchildren. Vern’s philosophy is - Learn from the past, live for today and focus on the future. Remember each day is a gift to be shared. Board member: January 2014 - present.
David Van Straten, II
David is an attorney at Lin.Liebmann LLC in Allouez practicing in the areas of Estate Planning, Elder Law and General Corporate/Business. David received his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse and continued on to obtain his law degree from Creighton University School of Law in Omaha. An active member of the community, David supports many local organizations in addition to Heritage Hill Foundation, including the De Pere Lions Club, where he is a past president, vice president and treasurer. Born and raised in Seymour, David returned to the area after graduating from law school to establish his practice and raise his family. David is an avid sports fan and takes every opportunity he can to see his beloved Wisconsin sports teams in person. Board member: April 2017 - present
Colleen was born and raised in Freedom, Wisconsin, where she attended grade school and high school. She worked as a secretary in an Appleton bank for five years full time and then part time after marriage and two sons. When her husband Ron started an insurance agency she left the bank to do book work for the business. After the boys were raised she began volunteering when they moved to Green Bay in 1980. As her husband’s business continued to grow, she was instrumental in helping him as a corporate wife, organizing many activities and events for the company. When the company was sold she turned her attention to the Green Bay community. She enjoys her 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. “My heart will always be with Heritage Hill. Karen Wojahn - Treasurer
Karen received her CPA certificate after graduating from University of Wisconsin-Madison with an accounting degree. She worked in accounting over the years and has been involved in many nonprofit organizations. Embroidery is her passion, and she served as President of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America 2005-2007. Karen enjoys traveling, golfing in summer and cross country skiing in winter. Karen has been married to Dennis for 46 years and they have two children, Laura and Patrick, and four grandchildren. “ I look forward to serving on the Heritage Hill Foundation Board.” Board member: March 2014 - present.
Dan is a lifelong resident of Green Bay. He earned an accounting degree from the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay and joined a local accounting firm named Shinners, Hucovski & Company, which eventually merged with Schenck. Since 2008, Dan has been the managing shareholder of Schenck’s Green Bay office with nearly 100 employees. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Dan specializes in providing accounting and auditing services, strategic planning, ownership transition consulting, individual and corporate taxation, and accounting system analysis for clients in a variety of industries. He is one of the firm’s business valuation consultants and has significant experience guiding clients through the process of buying and selling businesses. In addition to the Heritage Hill Foundation, Dan is currently on the Board of Directors for the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Green Bay, Inc. Board member: 2013 - present.
